چکیده

This paper is an attempt to clarify the status of discourse markers. These lexical expressions have been studied under various labels, including discourse markers, discourse connectives, discourse operators, pragmatic connectives, sentence connectives, and cue phrases. Although most researchers agree that they are expressions which relate discourse segments, there is no agreement on how they are to be defined or how they function. After reviewing prior theoretical research, I define discourse markers as a class of lexical expressions drawn primarily from the syntactic classes of conjunctions, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. With certain exceptions, they signal a relationship between the interpretation of the segment they introduce, $2, and the prior segment, S1. They have a core meaning, which is procedural, not conceptual, and their more specific interpretation is 'negotiated' by the context, both linguistic and conceptual. There are two types: those that relate the explicit interpretation conveyed by $2 with some aspect associated with the segment, S l; and those that relate the topic of $2 to that of S 1. I conclude by presenting what appears to be the major classes according to their function. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Extending the technology acceptance model with task-technology fit constructs

During the past decade, two signi®cant models of information technology (IT) utilization behavior have emerged in the MIS literature. These two models, the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the task±technology ®t model (TTF), provide a much needed theoretical basis for exploring the factors that explain software utilization and its link with user performance. These models offer different, t...

Back-channel feedback, responses such as uh-uh from a listener, is a pervasive feature of conversation. It has long been thought that the production of back-channel feedback depends to a large extent on the actions of the other conversation partner, not just on the volition of the one who produces them. In particular, prosodic cues from the speaker have long been thought to play a role, but hav...

Primal-dual affine-scaling methods have recently been extended from linear programming to semidefinite programming. We show how to analyze these methods in the framework of potential reduction algorithms. The analysis suggests implementable variants of the methods as 'long step predictor-corrector' algorithms, where the step length is determined by the potential function. A numerical comparison...

It is commonly assumed that the assertion/presupposition distinction maps fairly directly onto the distinction between new and old information. This assumption is made doubtful by presupposing constructions that regularly convey new information: uniquely identifying descriptions, ' informative presupposit ion' / t -clefts , reverse wh-clefts, announcements embedded under factives, nonrestrictiv...
